"Brass Jug" Picture #10

It is now 5 weeks since I started painting, and the first milestone  passed is the painting of Number Ten, "Brass Jug."

The window is the one on our upstairs landing. as you can see it's a stained glass leaded light, 110 years old. It is frosted glass, which is difficult to show but I hope I have got away with it.

I have tried to build on the advice from Linda and Celeste, and painted the background and the jug to be a 'whole' rather than a background that bore little relationship to the subject.

  1. Bravo, John, you're in progress (does it mean something in english, I wonder...) ! I want to say : you paint better and better !
Acrylic is so different than watercolour, I really can't tell you advices. Just work and work and work... and be happy to.

  2. This looks great. I do like the relationship of the window to the brass jug, as well as the color relationships.

A NOTE ON THE SAMOVAR PAINTING: I kept thinking about your background problem --and your dislike of the slickness, so I took a close look at an oil painting I have on masonite. The artist had applied a thick gesso undercoat/primer on the board using an inch and a half wide house painting brush. The strokes were obvious and done randomly going in every direction. I could see the bristles of his brush. This might be a method for handling the background on your lovely samovar painting? The acrylic washes could be thin, but they would have depth, strength in keeping with the strength of your palette. Slickness would not be an issue.

  8. This is masterful John! The glass looks incredibly real and I really get a sense of light pouring through the stained glass - and it absolutely looks frosted.
The whole thing is just remarkable! I reckon you've actually been painting on the quiet for years and have just been having us all on ;0)

  15. I don't know much about acrylics but you seem to have a definite affinity for them. I agree with CrimsonLeaves that your drawing skills are evident in this beautiful painting.
