The Blog of the John Simlett Studio
You painted Lauren so beautifully, John!!!!! It's so hard to believe that this is the first time you painted hair....she's beautiful and you should be so proud of this painting!!!
She's a beautiful girl John. I think human portraiture is so difficult but you've done a really good job on all the portraits you've done so far especially as this is only number 5!
She is a beauty, John!
You're just not done. You put in the dark, now layer the lighter shades over it till you get to the final highlights. If it's oils, you may let it dry a bit. She's a lovely girl, well worth your efforts.
Good work...what a beauty she is!
Lauren is a beauty, John! And your portrait is wonderful. Hair is always difficult to render. I just read Linda's comment - she knows what she's talking about :) She has given me some great tips, too.Thank you for all your kind comments on my blog!! It really does show in your painting when you love your subject, and are happy working with it. And I love the idea of a red polka dot scarf!!!Kathryn

She is a real beauty, John. And I think Linda is right (though I know nothing about painting with acrylics), there is a little more work to do on her hair. You captured her expression beautifully.
Portraiture is so specialized. I admire your courage because although I paint them a few times a year, no one sees the results because they just are not "quite right." Was it Sargent who reportedly said - a portrait is a picture where something is not quite right about the mouth! Hard to imagine anyone finding something wrong with what he did.Good for you, John, and I think you did GREAT JOB!
