Wells Cathedral, A Work in Progress.

It's been ages since I've posted and I'm not keeping up with my friends blogs, for which I apologise. Life is very busy at the moment. We have the first of 3 Christmas Showings this Thursday (10-00  ~  1600).

The Gallery Lady and I have spoken twice more ... but I'm not sure if we will go far together.

I'm buried in drawing Wells Cathedral. Although I'm not keen on its exterior, inside is a delight. It looks modern but is about 900+ years old.

It's a big drawing (pen & ink) 22 inches high and 16 inches wide. Being the World's worst photographer: I have managed to make a black and white picture look Green and Brown!! Don't know how I managed it.

Celeste suggested that a WIP might be in order, and here it is!

I understand that many different activities, with the drawing in pen and ink ... when comes the evening, also get to travel the blogosphere and leave comments can be too!
Have a nice days, dear John.

  15. It is such a busy time of year isn't it? I've fallen behind with my friends posts too, which is always a sad thing. But I'm here to say hello john and that I missed you!! I think Celeste had it right a WIP was the way to go as this is gorgeous!! And I was wondering how I managed to make a white horse look pink today so I guess you and I are in the same boat with our camera skills. ;)

  16. It certainly is busy, I've just returned from a show ... and a 12 hour show is a bit telling on old bones! I'll really try to catch up with everyone this weekend ... pink horses sound good :0)

  17. Wow, John - as if drawing an arch is not difficult enough - how about a slightly off center arch seen from below? And you have the dimension/proportions exact! Amazing! And I love ( and am grateful for ) the work in progress!

  18. Thank you, Susan. Yes it's all about 'angles' and they will get more and more complex as the work develops ... if one is off then they will all seem wrong ... that's the challenge I have set myself!

  21. What a powerful drawing! The design is spectacular. The finished drawing will be too; your a talented craftsman John Simlett. I've been just as negligent, I apologize too. Tis the season to be busy. Thankfully, there's usually peace on earth and in our household after Christmas. --What is a WIP? I am terrible at acronyms--and actually hate them. Using them too often assumes everybody is into whatever you're into big time and mostly they are not. To me, LOL means lots of laughs; to Ellis, LOL means lots of love. I guess I'm the funny one and he's the lover. LOL :-) To others, it means something else, which I keep forgetting.

    1. Thank you, Linda, you're too kind to an old scribbler. Sorry about WIP (Work in Progress). I used that acronym in Industry many years ago, but it was only when I came into this part of the blogasphere that I noted that 'artists' seem to use it all the time.

In the 1930's an American named Taylor sorted out industry and all its shortcomings, as a result of which America sprang ahead of the rest of the field. In the intervening years all he taught got forgotten until the
Japanese rediscovered it. They took over the world with modern advanced technology!!

Much of Taylor's vocabulary got absorbed into the vocabulary of the modern day consultant and politician... it sounded good but meant nothing in it's new usage, Such neo-Taylorism's as: WIP, JIT (Just in Time), Centres of Excellence, Mission Statements, Line Managers, Bench Marking, World Class, facilitators ... none of which are defined. For example, where is World Class defined? It sounds plausible enough though! And so we are directed by the use of smoke screens and mirrors ....SO... sorry about WIP!!!!

  22. Hi John, I am so happy you are doing a wip. It's great seeing how you begin one of your masterpieces. Can't wait to see your next post.

  23. You've barely started but your awesomeness is already very apparent. Big thanks for agreeing to do a WIP ... I'm on the edge of my seat waiting to see the next stage.
I understand about your lack of time and am pathetically behind with blogging myself and I haven't touched a brush or pencil in weeks. We can only do what we can do. Good luck with the shows.

  24. Thank you , John. Strange isn't it, how time flies by...I get up earlier and earlier and go to bed later and later (seven days a week) and still don't have enough time!
