"On Reflection" (painting #45)

My daughter bought me a canvas for Christmas. I thought I would try a still-life and have a go at reflections.

As she lives on an old Welsh farm (her house is 400 years old) I thought I would paint this for her farmhouse kitchen.

  1. You certainly have an eye for beauty, John. This would look great anywhere. BUT a 400 years old farmhouse will be just PERFECT!

  3. John this is fantastic! It reminds me of the dark classical style of the 17th century Dutch painters that I saw when we visited Rijksmusuem museum which is perfect for the kitchen of such an old farmhouse

    1. When I first started drawing in 1980, the Dutch printers in Roermond, told me I drew like a Dutch artist of the 17C. They showed me an example. Now you draw a similar comparison, Nic ... perhaps there's Dutch blood in my veins - which is OK, I really like the Dutch.

  5. Lovely! You're no slouch in the talent department either John. This one should be priced 12,000 or so. I'm talking dollars. You talk pounds. The pricing of this calibre work is one thing I learned at that class I took-- not that I couldn't have figured that out myself. Time is money.-after all the joy you got from painting that beauty.

  7. Gorgeous painting, John! I love the richness and warmth of the colors [and the 17th c. Dutch still life look]. I am sure it will look perfect in your daughter's home.

  8. Wonderful, John - I can just imagine it in the kitchen of your daughters antique farmhouse! I do agree about the look of a Dutch master! It's awesome!

    1. More a rookie apprentice than a Dutch Master, but thank you for your kind comments

  10. This is an absolutely amazing painting. I think it's just phenomenal - almost in the literal sense of the word, a phenomenon - how you began with the marvelous line drawings and made yourself into a painter. At 44 paintings you are great. Once you get to 300 - wow! And I'll say I knew you when..

Now be careful, John, don't let all this praise go to your head. :)

    1. Praise indeed, Dan, thank you ... but there is still a long way to go until I paint 'naturally' ... there's still too much 'trial & error'.
