Imogen 4 - Adding Skin Tones

The battle with oils continues - nearly lost it two or three times: I keep painting the drawing out and then struggle to get it back.

Tried using the same brushes, but two sizes smaller, seems to help.

I'm using a Zorn Palette: A Titanium White (alkyd), Ivory Black, Pale Yellow Ochre, Raw Umbra and Cadmium Red

  1. It's wonderful, wish I could get that far with a portrait! Valerie

  2. Very nice! Did you find that the grisaille facilitated matching the color values?

    1. Exactly - I graduated greys (grays) from white to black in ten shades, and applied them, then I could match the colour (color) values accordingly.

  3. Yes, wow, beautiful!
So sweet of you to wonder why I am not posting, thank you. I had a few weeks of terrible asthma that was hard to beat. I had an episode like that three years ago, and I'm not sure what triggered it. I know your granddaughter has asthma too, so you know what it means. Still very tired but getting better. Not painting yet but have been working on changing my website. Have a great weekend! xx Judy

    1. So sorry to hear that, Judy and how amazing that you should remember my granddaughter suffers from asthma. Just take it easy and build up your strength; it's too easy to overdo it when you start feeling better and then put yourself back. Take care.

  4. It is very good. John. I ask this politely...Why do you expect not to struggle? I still do.
The more you know the harder it gets.
You blending is good and you didn't make mud or get the chalky effect from over blending.
I will look forward to the next one.

    1. You're right, the struggle goes with the territory. The next one will find me slightly better aware than before.
